She Wished for Wings - Papilio Demoleous Swallowtail Butterfly with Goldwork Embroidery

£850.00
Complex embroideries like this species of butterfly - known as Papilio Demoleus, often start out looking strange and indistinguishable. Much like how caterpillars are unassuming creatures that morph into graceful butterflies. Metamorphosis has always been a great symbol for poets and artists and is one that is of great personal importance to me.

This hand embroidered butterfly is stitched over 70-80 hours using specialised Goldwork metals which are individually cut to size. A blend of cotton and Indian silk threads have been used in over 10 different shades to illustrate the eclectic assortment of colour in this species

The wings of the swallowtail have been painstakingly stitched with one fine thread of cotton/silk at a time. This technique of hand embroidery is known as Needle Painting. An approach that uses a combination of long and short stitches to produce embroidery that has the same qualities of painting. Each stroke of my needle is carefully considered and conscious.

The body of the swallowtail is perhaps the most meticulous component of the embroidery. I begin by shaping a body using several layers of felt which is then covered by metal wires. The felt is carefully tapered to create depth and dimension to the body. I then coat a cotton thread in beeswax which is then used to sew threw the individually cut antique gold metals. These metal wires are carefully placed on top of the felt. The beeswax helps the metal wire to stick to the cotton thread without moving around.

To finish, I add two tiny wooden beads for the eyes and antennae.

I stitch this piece on an organic, unbleached cotton fabric. It is set in a 7” embroidery hoop ready to hang when you receive it. The embroidery is approximately 3” by 3.5” wide. It creates an entrancing focal point for your bookshelf, writing desk or even a plain wall.

I am happy to personalise this piece by working with a fabric colour of your choice. Kindly send me a direct message if you would like a different colour background.

Your butterfly will arrive lovingly packaged in brown paper, twine, a wax seal and hand picked dried flowers 🖤

Postage and Packaging is completely free and I ship worldwide! Kindly note that this piece is made to order and I will require 3 weeks to complete it
