Turqouise Goldwork Scarab Beetle with Antique Gold Beads
£240.00
In Egyptian mythology, the Scarab beetle symbolises the restoration of life.
The life of this embroidered beetle began by creating a template for his body. Using several layers of felt padding, I secure a body and head on an organic cotton fabric. Beetles often have a rounded shape and I try to recreate this tapered effect with varying sizes of felt padding.
Metal wires are then individually measured and cut to size. Each wire is waxed with beeswax before being sewn on over the felt padding. The beeswax ensures the metal stays in place. I alternate between a smooth gold wire and a textured turquoise wire which creates an exquisite stripe. Other materials I have used include cotton threads, metallic threads, antique gold and turquoise beads, and a thick antique gold cords.
To finish off I outlined the beetle's body using a thick antique gold cord and added beads for his eyes.
Embroidered on a unbleached, 100% natural cotton and framed in a 7" oval wooden effect hoop
Size of beetle: 2 inches long, 1.5 inches wide
