Rutilant (n.) Glowing with Golden Light - Hand Embroidered Goldwork Bee with Pearls, Twisted cords, Fine Gold fibres & Antique Gold beads

£350.00
Long before I held an embroidery needle, I recognised that the beauty of metal thread work greatly intrigued me.

Despite being synonymous with splendour and its deep rooted symbolism, I am drawn to Goldwork embroidery simply because of the way it interacts with light and for its tarnishing process.

Insects, particularly bees, have always called out to me. Some people are reminded of their loved ones when they hear the hum of bees. For others, it is the dawn of spring that makes them think of bees. I am simply drawn to bees because they create beautiful surroundings for us to enjoy. From spring to the fall, bees help flowers prosper. Fields of beautiful wildflowers and meadows rich with colour all burst with life, year after year, thanks to pollinators like bees.

My Goldwork bee embroidery exudes my love of light entwined with my affinity to the humble bumble 🐝

This 5” hoop has been stitched over 30 hours using specialised Goldwork threads, sequins and beads. I began by stitching the body using several layers of felt padding to create a 3-dimensional effect. Rows of irregular potato pearls were then carefully sewn on alongside an antique gold twisted cord I purchased from my travels to India

I wanted to recreate the iridescence that is found in the wings of bees. So I spent the most amount of time carefully crafting these using thin gold wires, gold and bronze metallic threads, and white cotton threads.

For the thorax I have used a flower shaped sequin which I have secured with metallic thread.

To finish my embroidery, I used antique gold beads for the eyes. I also wrapped the bamboo hoop with a floral print binding to keep the fabric secure aswell as to add a hint of colour

This piece is perfect for hanging or placing on a bookshelf to admire. Each of my embroideries come with care instructions and are wrapped carefully with brown paper, twine and sealed with wax
